Corvette: Your Carcorvette Information |

The Corvettes Inspiration, Development and Appeal During WW II, American soldiers admired a British car known as the MG. The MG was a sleek little sports car that not only caught the eye of soldiers but inspired the creation of the American Chevrolet Corvette. One of the most intriguing thing about the Corvette is the team of people that created it. Edward Cole was the Chief Engineer of Chevrolet when he assigned Harley Earl and Zora Arkus-Duntov to the creation and design of America's first sports car. Although the car was inspired by the British MG, the full development was truly a team effort with originality.>/p> In 1953, the Chevrolet Corvette named by Myron Scott, was introduced. It's fiberglass body, was only one key issue in the role in the fascinating history for the Corvette. Although only a limited number of Corvette's were made in 1953, increased manufacturing and improvements were implemented due to the introduction of Ford's Thunderbird. In 1954, General Motors then increased their production of the Corvette and 3,265 were made that year. Zora Arkus-Duntov, whom was promoted to Chief Engineer, played a very phenomenal part in the Corvette's claim to racing history. In 1955, Zora Arkus-Duntov enters a disguised model of a 1956 Corvette in the Pike's Peak Hill Climb. With a V-8 engine, a new stock car record was set by the Corvette. This was the first claim for Corvetter in it's place of racing history. Setting records on track was just the tip of the ice burg for the Corvette. With different models and designs, performance was a key issue, until 1960. After the retirement of Harley Earl, Bill Mitchell replaced him as the new Chief of Design. Bill Mitchell offered the public two versions of the Corvette, coupe and convertible and four engine choices. Risky and yet most inspiring change made, in 1968 the Stingray was introduced. With Bill Mitchell and Zora Arkus-Duntov still evolving the Corvette, it was no surprise that they had improved the car's engine design and offered a lead free engine as instructed by Ed Cole. More changes came to the Corvette in the 1980's. By 1984, there was no longer a front grill on the Corvette. Appearance was not the only thing changing but so was the body frame and engine. Allowing for demands of the future, General Motors continued to advance the design of the Corvette while maintaining the lead ahead of it's competitors. Having examined the many steps in the development of the Corvette, not only should it be admired for it's looks and performance but as well for it's very bold achievements. In closing, I would like to give respect to the key creators of the Corvette. Zaro Arkus-Duntov - December 25, 1909 - April 21, 1996 Edward Nicholas Cole - September 17, 1909 - May 2, 1977 Harley J. Earl - November 22, 1893 - April 10, 1969 William T. Mitchell - July 2, 1912 - September 12, 1988 One more thing, if you should happen to enter moose
